How do I find out whether I suffer from coeliac disease?

The disease is recognised by the presence of its characteristic symptoms, results of blood tests (serological coeliac markers) and the biopsy of small intestine tissue. Importantly, a gluten-free diet is implemented after all the medical tests have been completed. Giving up gluten before the diagnosis will produce a false-negative result.

Serological markers of the coeliac disease that are most often used for diagnostic purposes include:

  • Anti-endomysial antibodies (EmA) – routinely marked in IgA class in patients with IgA deficiency in IgG class.
  • Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG)
  • Biopsy of the small intestine and histopathological tests of sample tissues are NECESSARY STEPS in the process of diagnosing the disease. Samples are taken from the duodenum usually through endoscopy of the upper section of the digestive tract (gastroscopy).
